Can I Use Other Syrups with SodaStream?
If you're a fan of sparkling water and love the convenience of your SodaStream, you might be wondering: can I use other syrups, like Coke, Pepsi, Jones, Fizzy-Pop, or Torani, with my SodaStream machine? The short answer is yes! In fact, using alternative syrups is a great way to bring variety and excitement to your sparkling beverages. Let’s dive into why it’s possible and how you can get the most out of your SodaStream (or any home carbonator like Aarke, Ninja Thirsti, FIZZpod, etc.) with non-SodaStream syrups.
Why Use Alternative Syrups with Your SodaStream?
SodaStream is an incredibly versatile machine, designed to carbonate water and create your own fizzy drinks at home. While SodaStream has its own line of syrups, many users opt for a broader selection of flavours—like those from Coke, Pepsi, and other specialty brands—to suit their preferences. Here’s why you might want to branch out:
-
More Flavour Options: Brands like Jones Soda, Fizzy-Pop, and Torani offer a unique range of flavours, from classic sodas to craft beverages. Why limit yourself to just the standard cola and lemon-lime when you can experiment with exotic flavours like caramel or pomegranate?
-
Better Taste: If you have a preference for a specific brand, such as the bold flavour of Pepsi or the exciting taste of Jones, it makes sense to use their syrups with your SodaStream. These syrups can replicate the taste of your favorite sodas more closely than the traditional SodaStream options as they are the authentic syrups at 5:1 ratio.
-
Customization: Using other syrups gives you the flexibility to adjust sweetness, carbonation levels, or even mix different flavours together to create your own custom sodas.
-
Craft Soda Experience: With syrup options like Torani (often used for coffee or cocktails), you can elevate your SodaStream drinks to a more sophisticated level. Imagine sipping a fizzy, Torani flavoured italian soda after a long day or serving unique homemade sodas at your next gathering.
What to Know Before Using Non-SodaStream Syrups
Although it’s possible to use other syrups, there are a few considerations to ensure the best results:
-
Check Syrup Ratio: Not all syrups are created equal. All the syrups we carry (like those from Coke or Pepsi) come direct from the factory and is the same syrup used to make can/bottle/fountain soda at the standard 5:1 water to syrup ratio. SodaStream on the other hand is very over concentrated at 18:1 made with with added ingredients/sweeteners.
-
Syrup Dosage: SodaStream syrups come with clear instructions on how much syrup to use per liter of carbonated water. The colder and more carbonated your water is the less syrup you'll use. For our 5:1 ratio start with about 160ml to make a 1L bottle.
At the end of the day it's based on your personal preference, experiment with how many pumps works for you so experiment to find the right balance of flavour. Start with a smaller amount and taste-test until you reach your preferred flavour intensity. -
When to Add Syrup: When using the SodaStream remember you only carbonate water and add the syrup afterwards. With the Drinkmate you can carbonate any liquid! You can add syrup, carbonate wine, beer, etc. before carbonating without diluting it so get creative!
-
Be Mindful of Sugar Content: Many store-bought sodas have high sugar content. Making your own drinks at home you can control how much syrup you use. Some brands also offer low-sugar or sugar-free options, so you can still enjoy a fizzy drink without the extra calories.
-
Cleaning: After using alternative syrups, be sure to thoroughly clean your SodaStream bottle and for Drinkmate clean the nozzle to prevent any syrup buildup.

How to Mix Non-SodaStream Syrups with Your SodaStream
Once you've chosen your syrup, here's how you can easily make your fizzy drinks with your SodaStream or any home carbonator.
-
Carbonate the Water: First, carbonate your water using your SodaStream machine. Follow the manufacturer's instructions to get your water fizzy to your preferred level. If you are using a Drinkmate you can add syrup or carbonate any drink without diluting it with water.
-
Add Syrup: After carbonating, pour in your chosen syrup directly into the bottle or in a glass and pour the soda water on top. The colder and more carbonated your water is the less syrup you'll use. For our 5:1 ratio start with about 160ml to make a 1L bottle and adjust up/down from there, or about 3-4 pumps with our syrup pumps. Juices can vary and have a ratio listed under each flavour.
At the end of the day it's based on your personal preference, experiment with how many pumps works for you so experiment to find the right balance of flavour. Start with a smaller amount and taste-test until you reach your preferred flavour intensity. You can always add more syrup if you prefer a stronger flavour. -
Stir Gently: Seal the bottle and gently swirl it to mix the syrup and the carbonated water. Don’t shake the bottle vigorously as that can cause the carbonation to escape and result in a foamy mess.
-
Serve & Enjoy: Once mixed, pour the soda into a glass or enjoy straight from the bottle. Add ice, garnishes like lemon slices, or even a splash of rum or vodka for a fizzy cocktail!
